Fear Street Trilogy: Sam and Deena

Disclaimer here: this movie series is AMAZING, has a 90s grunge setting, and has great WLW representation with Sam and Deena’s relationship, but they are horror movies. Don’t get me wrong; they’re not terrifying, but there are some intense moments and gore, so take that as you will if you’re not a horror fan. This unique movie series is based on Fear Street books by R.L. Stein and follows Deena, Sam, her brother Josh, and their friends as they encounter the “Witch of Shadyside”, a witch who sends her deceased victims after the teens for disturbing her grave. However, everything is not how it seems.

The first movie primarily focuses on Sam and Deena’s experience with the witch, as Sam has been marked with the curse, and Deena and her friends race to figure out how to save her. The second movie takes Deena and her brother Josh to the lone survivor of the curse and camp massacre of 1978, where they figure out pieces of the puzzle. In the third movie, Deena and Josh uncover the origins of the curse as Deena has visions of Sarah Fier (the witch) and the circumstances leading to her death and legend. Deena and Josh make a game plan for Sam and all of the stories converge for a climactic and unexpected ending.

Sam and Deena are also written well and have great chemistry and are affectionate which is a breath of fresh air to watch, as many lesbian representation is either written very staley or in a way that objectifies the women. The Fear Street Trilogy avoids using cliches and troupes or tasteless jokes aimed at Sam and Deena, which I appreciated. Sam and Deena are also used in the flashbacks of Sarah Fier in 1666, which is cool to see. I had such a fun time watching these movies when they came out in the summer of 2021 and I have rewatched them many times, if you are looking for a fun, enjoyable queer horror movie or three to watch with friends look no further, these are those movies. I love that with this trilogy you can have a watch party if you’re so inclined and each is so different yet so connected that it never gets boring or predictable and is a fun watch experience.

You can watch all three Fear Street movies on Netflix. Fear Street Trailer
